Costa Rican Tres Volcanes

The Region

The climate in Costa Rica ranges from equatorial in the plains to temperate in the plateau and cool to cold in the mountains. The Tres Volcanes Region is located on the Atlantic slope at an altitude which varies from 1200 to 1650 meters above see level. The harvesting season at the lower altitude is between August and November. At the higher altitude they harvest between October and January. The Tres Volcanes is know as a strictly hard bean (SHB) and is located in the southern part of Costa Rica between Parque Nacional Volcan Poas and Parque Nacional Volcan Irazu. Its nearest port is Puerto Limon. The Atlantic Coast slopes have a climate, which is almost constantly rainy. The soil in this region is volcanic and is fertile.

The Tres Volcanes Bean

The Tres Volcanes coffee bean is a strictly hard bean, which is large and flat. The color of the bean is a greenish blue. When tasting the coffee it will surprise you with its high acidity. The coffee also has a very good body. The aroma you get from the bean is wonderful.

The Preparation

The beans are hand picked and prepared using the wet method process. Drying of the bean is done in two ways:

  • Patio Dried is when the beans are put outside and sun dried.
  • Mechanical Drums are fueled by wood or parchment.

The Beans are sorted in these three ways: By water the bean is sorted by its density. Mechanically sorted beans are done more for shipments to the U.S.A. where the bean is sorted by air and a series of vibrations. Electronically sorted beans are known as European Prep. They are then put into sisel or kenafbags that weigh 69kg (152Ibs).
